About Karnatak University

The Karnatak University was established by the Bombay Legislature of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency through the Karnatak University Act of 1949 and attained the status of a statutory university on 1st March 1950. The jurisdiction of the University extends across the districts of Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttar Kannada. Spread over a sprawling 888-acre campus, the University offers a wide array of academic programs across multiple faculties, including Arts, Commerce, Education, Law, Management, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. It also operates several postgraduate centers, thereby catering to the diverse academic needs of the region. The emblem of Karnatak University is a symbolic reflection of its vision and mission. At its center is a papal tree, accompanied by an open book, the figures of a bull and a rising sun, and the profound Sanskrit motto 'Arive Guru', meaning "Wisdom is Guru". This emblem underscores the University's commitment to making wisdom and knowledge all-encompassing forces to eradicate ignorance and illiteracy.

Karnatak University currently comprises 47 Postgraduate Departments, with a dedicated faculty of 224 teachers and a student strength of approximately 4,500 across PG, M.Phil., and Ph.D. programs. Of the total student population, 47% are female students, indicating a strong representation of women in higher education. Including PG Diploma, M.Phil., and Ph.D. courses, 6% of the students are from outside the state, contributing to the University's academic diversity.

In adherence to the State Government's Policy on social justice and inclusion, the University reserves seats for SC/ST, Cat-I, OBC, BC, and minority communities. In addition, one seat each is reserved for the children of ex-servicemen, freedom fighters, persons with disabilities, and sports achievers, further reinforcing its commitment to equity and access.

The University also runs its own High School—University Public School, established in 1964, which serves as a practice teaching school for the B.Ed. College affiliated with Karnatak University, thus supporting the professional development of future educators.

Karnatak University has five constituent colleges offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses across a broad range of disciplines, including Science, Arts, Commerce, Fine Arts, Law, and Education.
